The photographs in this section will clearly illustrate how nonextraction treatment preserves the delicate balance of function and creates these wonderful smiles

NON EXTRACTION PHILOSOPHY

During the growth of the face and dental arches, the bones are quite "soft" or malleable. Any disturbance to this process can produce a lasting effect on the form of the face.

The most common disturbances are habits that cause the mouth to remain open for prolonged amounts of time.

Examples are mouth breathing (due to blockage of the nasal passage from allergies, sinusitis or enlarged tonsils and adenoids),

finger sucking,

nail biting and certain mouthpieces of musical instruments.

These habits cause the tongue to fall away from the roof of the mouth (palate).

If the tongue is temporarily removed from this delicate balance, the teeth will tip and over erupt into the vacated tongue space - causing a loss in arch width. Less width means less space for the teeth - resulting in excessive crowding.
